A Carousel of Conscience

Or lack thereof, as the case may be.

Candyass RINO has a good post on the newest (and oldest) roadblock to ObamaCare: Bart Stupak and abortion. (via HotAir) This will be Stupak’s second go-round and we all know how his first attempt at playing the spoiler wound up:

His opposition to the senate’s language, in spite of those conversations and intense pressure from the White House, could augur a challenge to the compromise in the House when the two versions of the bill are reconciled.

The Senate language represented “a dramatic shift in federal policy,” said Stupak, adding that he remained hopeful that the differences could be resolved in conference. Nelson, though, said earlier Saturday that his support for the legislation was contingent on the abortion compromise remaining in it.

And we all also know that the only reason this abortion-funding amendment isn’t simply three words long-“Hyde Amendment applies”-is so that one way or another, by hook or by crook, federal funds will be used to pay for abortion. There’s no…other…reason.

We’ll just have to wait to see if Stupak’s conscience regarding abortion is strong enough to withstand the arm-twisting avalanche that’s sure to come if and when it comes time to reconcile the bills. Pelosicare passed by three votes. I for one remain optimistic that Stupak won’t budge and Pelosi will lose more votes than she’ll gain as a result. Who does he peel off?

By the way, how does this:

Stupak, in an interview with POLITICO, called the Senate’s bill’s abortion position “unacceptable”

Square with this:

adding that he remained hopeful that the differences could be resolved in conference.

Can anyone explain to me how a ‘compromise’ abortion-funding amendment could possibly be crafted to placate both sides? Hell I’m glad they’re trying because I don’t think it is and the longer this goes on the better. Obama has tried to violate Lincoln’s fundamental law of politics by pleasing all of the people all of the time to disastrous consequences. It ain’t gonna work for Pelosi and Reid either.
